Junkers Ju 488

The Junkers Ju 488 is a four-engined mid-wing monoplane with retractable undercarriage and a crew of three. The engine was a further development based on the Junkers Ju 388 The drive was carried out by four radial engines, type BMW 801 TJ, turbocharged specifically for high-altitude flight. Description

Compared to the output type, the Junkers Ju 388, the fuselage and wing center section was newly developed substantially. Wingtip and bow were taken from the Ju 388 K- series. The tail was similar to the Ju 188 C- series carried out while the tail was taken from the Ju 288 C series.

Early 1944 was at Latécoère in Toulouse, France, started the construction of the prototypes Ju 488 V1 and V2. After the Allied landing in Normandy, was decided in July 1944, the already completed parts by rail to the Junkers plant in Bernburg (Saale ) to convert. Then the French Resistance fighters destroyed the trunk and the middle wing section of the Ju 488 V1 on the night of 16-17. July 1944.
