Junkers Jumo 205

The Junkers Jumo 205 engine is one of the Junkers GmbH (from 1936: Junkers aircraft and engine plants ) developed and built 6- cylinder in-line diesel opposed piston engine.

Development

When it became clear that the Jumo 204 did not meet the increasing demands, a successor model was planned Junkers since 1931. It should give the same performance at reduced dimensions. Initially, the new engine was still called Jumo 5. The first test run took place on December 1, 1932 in the spring of 1933 was the pattern test. Its first use was the engine in the Focke- Wulf A 17

To make the engine known as Jumo 205 from 1934 reliable, many problems had to be solved in advance. For example, initially branded by the pistons and piston seizures were frequent. To avoid this, the pistons were made of different metals, the piston heads also heat protective hoods have been screwed. In addition, each piston was at the top of an undivided piston ring to secure ( the so-called Ring of Fire ), the heat dissipation and the gas tightness.

The engine had a good reputation at Deutsche Lufthansa; he was strong, reliable and consumed little fuel. However, when used in combat aircraft he showed unsatisfactory properties, so he reacted sluggish at speed changes and the formation flying with its many control processes caused many engine problems. His favorite was the purpose of long-haul flight in reconnaissance and patrol flights over the lake. In cruise flight, the specific fuel consumption was 218-231 g / kWh, with record flights were kWh to 211 g / achieved. The Jumo 205 was used in the early version of the bomber Junkers Ju 86 and the Dornier Do 18 flying boats and Blohm & Voss Ha 139.

He was later developed into equipped with turbocharger and intercooler Jumo 207B - altitude engine. This engine was used in the high altitude reconnaissance Ju 86 P / R.
