Junkers Jumo 223

The Junkers Jumo 223 was a water-cooled two-stroke diesel aircraft engine with 24 cylinders of the Junkers aircraft and engine plants.

Jumo engine the piston 223 was located at the four corners of a square with four intermediate crankshaft cylinder banks of six cylinders and twelve pistons. Two of the 48 pistons worked with a common combustion chamber on opposite crankshafts, as well as in the other Junkers two-stroke diesels ( Opposed-piston engine ). The development began around 1939 and continued until 1942, when the jet engines tied the development capacity and the project was stopped.

The engine was designed from the beginning to drive a counter-rotating twin screw air and had a corresponding reduction gear with a ratio of 3.86. Bore and stroke were compared with the Jumo 207 significantly reduced to enable increase the speed level can. In addition to a purge air blower, a turbocharger was fitted. Put to the test the first version delivers an output of 2500 hp at 4400 min -1. The engine ran only to the test. A version with a modified turbocharger was designed for full pressure altitude of 10,000 meters, but was not built. The configured Jumo 224 was similar in design, but with 73 liters capacity much larger.
