Juno (mythology)
Juno (Latin: Juno ) was an old Italian, in particular the Roman goddess. It was considered a goddess of birth, marriage and welfare.
Origins and cult
After she was equated with the Greek goddess Hera, and having served their role or their function, she was the wife of Jupiter and thus queen of the goddesses. Equating probably happened under Etruscan influence. In the Etruscans Juno was worshiped under the name of the university. Her parents were Saturn and Ops.
According to Varro was the cult of Juno Lucina, goddess of childbirth, introduced by the Sabine king Titus Tatius. Juno was the patroness of the city of Rome, was worshiped on the Capitoline Hill, which was done as part of the Capitoline Triad. The month of June name derives from Juno.
Outside Rome there were significant Juno cults among others in Teanum Sidicinum, Aesernia, Lanuvium, Gabii, Veii and Perusia. The Sabine goddess Juno Curitis was transferred as Juno Quiritis to Rome. It is often iconographically identified with Isis.
Sometimes the tradition of Valentine's Day is attributed to one of their observances, in which you were offered on 14 February floral offering.
Juno ( pl. Iunones ) was also called the personal guardian spirit of a woman. He was the female counterpart of the male genius.
Iconography
As an attribute of Juno often has the peacock, especially in baroque representations of love and beauty. On Roman coins she also wears the peacock, the (Long) scepter and patera. Also Getreideähren supporting figures come before. In allegorical representations of the four- element theory Juno is the air.
