Juozas Balčikonis

Juozas Balčikonis ( born March 24, 1885 in Ėriškiai, Rajongemeinde Panevėžys; † February 5, 1969 in Vilnius, Lithuania ) was a Lithuanian linguist and translator.

Life

Balčikonis grew up in the farmer's family and was the eldest. He learned in elementary school Ramygala and from 1898 at the Realschule Panevėžys. Here he became interested in Lithuanian language, read the forbidden literature. From 1906 he studied at the suggestion of Jonas Jablonski philology at the Department of Slavonic Studies at the University of Petersburg. After acquaintance with Casimir Buga, he immersed himself in the problems of the Lithuanian.

From 1918 to 1920 he was director of the high school Panevėžys and 1920-1924 of the teachers seminar Panevėžys. From 1924 to 1940 he lived in Kaunas. From 1924 to 1931 he taught at the Lietuvos universitetas and 1944-1960 at the Vilniaus universitetas; 1944 to 1950 was Chair of Lithuanian language. From 1944 he was a professor.

According to him, a high school in Panevėžys has been renamed.
