In 1979 he followed Udo Lattek as coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach and was 34 years to become the youngest head coach in the Bundesliga. Although the club performers had to let to various top clubs at this time, Heynckes kept his newly formed team almost constantly in the upper third of the table - with the exception of the 1982/83 season with a longer danger of relegation. He completed his most successful season since 1983 /84 when he reached the third place with Mönchengladbach, level on points with champions VfB Stuttgart and the runner-up Hamburger SV. In the same year the club reached under Heynckes the DFB Cup final, where he lost on penalties with 7:8 (1:1 aet) against Bayern Munich. In the 1986/87 season Mönchengladbach landed again in third place in the Bundesliga and presented with Uwe Rahn again a top scorer in the Bundesliga. Rahn finished the season with 24 goals from top scorer. In the DFB Cup, the club pushed on to the semifinals in the same year. In Mönchengladbach he won as a coach no titles. April 22, 1987 the team dropped out after a 0-0 draw at the Scottish club Dundee United followed by a 0-2 home defeat in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup from. After this season Heynckes moved to Bayern Munich.

Heynckes is considered as the discoverer of Lothar Matthaus, who in 1979 as a 18 -year-old was taken from Herzogenaurach to Mönchengladbach and continued to develop first-team regular under Heynckes.

Due to the strong reddening that takes his face in agitation, Heynckes was in his Mönchengladbacher the nickname " Osram ", after the same manufacturer for lamps. For the first time Rudi Gores wants to have used the term. The same is, however, also rumored Wolfram Wuttke. Later, the nickname was also known in the media.

1987-1991: FC Bayern Munich

1987 Heynckes was hired by Bayern Munich - again Udo Lattek was his predecessor, who had led the team in the preseason for the championship title. Heynckes ' first year was very successful from the perspective of Bavaria. In the championship only finished second, remained in the other competitions without a title, Heynckes built the team of FC Bayern to strong and was rewarded in 1989 by winning the German championship. This track defended Bayern under Heynckes in the following year. After the club in 1990/91, only second to the first FC Kaiserslautern was, it came in the season 1991/92 to a crisis for Bayern, by the disposals of Jürgen Kohler and Stefan Reuter and injuries by Raimond Aumann and Brian Laudrup was weakened. After four games without a win and a 1:4 home defeat against newly promoted Stuttgarter Kickers Heynckes was sacked on 8 October 1991 and replaced by Søren Lerby. Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness described this decision against Heynckes later as the "greatest mistake " of his career. Bayern had only been Tabellenzwölfter with four wins, four draws and four defeats. On the equally unsuccessful Lerby followed in mid-March Erich Ribbeck. Bayern finished the season in tenth place. For the first time since 1979, FC Bayern did not qualify for an international competition.

In the summer of 1992 Heynckes signed with Spanish side Athletic Bilbao a contract and, after Hennes Weisweiler and Udo Lattek the third German coach in Spain's top soccer league.

His time at the Basque club was a tradition from the beginning to be successful. Despite the handicap, to be allowed to sit only on players from the Basque Country, Heynckes formed a team that climbed in the first year from 15th to 8th place and qualified for the second year with space 5 for participation in the UEFA Cup.

During this time Heynckes again demonstrated a flair for young talent and brought, among others, the Basque Star Julen Guerrero out.

1994-1995: Eintracht Frankfurt

1994 Heynckes was hired along with Horst Koeppel as an assistant coach of Eintracht Frankfurt. Heynckes took over the concord in the first season after the departure of Uwe Bein and Uli Stein and initially pursued the goal of bringing calm to the team in order to subsequently make again for success. However, this project did not succeed.

The Hessians had with Andreas Koepke committed a new goalkeeper and the team around their star players Anthony Yeboah, Maurizio Gaudino ( which a change to the 1 FC Kaiserslautern was denied) constructed and Jay- Jay Okocha. Ironically, these three players attended by a moderate cost for a scandal: The final training of Concord on Friday before an important game against HSV according to coach Heynckes had " badly trained some players ". This included the three stars above. Then continued Heynckes, angry about their setting, a 30-minute drive to the forest. Yeboah told the coach that he would not appear for the game against Hamburg. Okocha pretended not mentally to be able to play football and Gaudino felt after two training sessions on Friday physically broken. All three players made themselves sick for the 16th matchday of the 1994/95 season and were a couple of days later deleted entirely from the squad. Only Okocha was used in the second half for Eintracht. Yeboah criticized the measure: " The expulsion was completely unnecessary and a big mistake. He has the club Frankfurt busted with this action for years. "

Even without the three reached the Eintracht short time later, after two victories over Napoli the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, but in the league success was missing. After only nine months in the club Heynckes finally solved on 2 April 1995 to his contract and gave up a settlement.

In his first year, he led the club to a UEFA Cup place. The following year, Tenerife eliminated in the semi-final against FC Schalke 04. In the league Tenerife occupied under Heynckes the ninth of 22 seats.

As Real Madrid failed to agree with Ottmar Hitzfeld said the traditional club from the Spanish capital to at Heynckes. Finally Heynckes signed in Madrid and was the successor to the Italian Fabio Capello, who had previously been dismissed after only one year. From the outset, it appeared the media behave towards and skeptical. The departure of the Spanish Cup against a second division team in January 1998 caused unrest first. The finale was obtained at the same time his last game as coach of Real Madrid, as he was released after just one season.
