Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius

Jurgis Matulaitis (also: Georg Matulaitis Jerzy Matulewicz ) ( born April 13, 1871 in Marijampolė; † January 27, 1927 in Kaunas) is a Catholic Seliger and was from 1918 to 1925 Archbishop of Vilnius and Founder.

Jurgis Matulaitis renewed the Congregation of Marians and acted as their Superior General. In Freiburg he continued his studies and completed a doctorate on Orthodox theology. 1898 Matulaitis was ordained priest in 1907, he taught as a professor of theology at Saint Petersburg. From his office (from 1918) as Archbishop of Vilnius, he was recalled by the Curia, as Vilnius after the end of the Russian Empire fell to Poland. He was instead charged with preparing a concordat with Lithuania, but died unexpectedly on a visitation of the Holy See. He was from 1925 until his death Titular Archbishop of Adulis.

Matulaitis in 1987, beatified the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Christianization of Lithuania, by Pope John Paul II.
