Juriens is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Juriens is located on 797 m above sea level. M., 7 km southwest of Orbe and 18 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The farming village extends on a spur on the slopes of the Jura, above the valley of Nozon.

The area of ​​9.4 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Jura. The communal land extends from the slopes of the Jura south of Nozontals westwards over the thickly forested slopes (La Côte and Drochard ) to the level at Chalet Dernier, on with 1'290 m above sea. M. the highest point of Juriens is achieved. On this chain between the upper Nozontal and the Central Plateau Jura extensive high grazing pastures with the typical tall spruce trees that are either individually or in groups. From the municipality surface 1997 2 % came from settlements, 51 % of forest and woody plants and 47% to agriculture.

To Juriens include some isolated farms of the Jura heights. Neighboring communities of Juriens are Romainmôtier -Envy, Moiry, La Praz, Mont- la -Ville and Vaulion.

Population

With 299 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Juriens one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 94.1 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.1 % and 1.7 % in English (as of 2000). The population of Juriens amounted in 1850 to 280 residents in 1910 to 287 inhabitants. Thereafter, a decline of about one-third to 201 inhabitants was recorded until 1980, since then a slight upward trend was observed again.

Economy

Juriens was until the second half of the 20th century, a predominantly agricultural village embossed. In the lower part of farming community is operated while prevailing in the Jura hills cattle breeding and dairy farming. Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, with the main access Romainmôtier -Envy takes place here. By Postbus course, which runs from Croy to L' Isle, Juriens is connected to the public transport network.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1263 under the name Jurians, which is probably due to a Burgundian settlers named Juringos. Juriens belonged in the Middle Ages to the monastery Romainmôtier. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village was part of the Kastlanei and bailiwick Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime Juriens belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. It was in 1798 the district of Orbe allocated. Juriens was plagued by numerous serious fires, the last in 1811 destroyed almost half of the village.

Attractions

The Church of Juriens was built in 1968. In the center are some typical farmhouses dating from the 19th century are preserved.
