Jurjen Ferdinand Koksma

Jurjen Ferdinand Koksma (* April 21, 1904, Schoterland, † December 17, 1964, Amsterdam) was a Dutch mathematician who worked in the field of analytic number theory, in particular on Diophantine approximation.

Koksma his doctorate in 1930 at the University of Groningen on the subject over stelsels Diophantine ongelijkheden ( using systems of Diophantine inequalities ). His doctor father was Johannes van der Corput. After a six year stay in Göttingen Koksma in 1930 professor at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he began to build the newly established faculties of mathematics and physics together with the physicist Johannes Gerardus Sizoo in October. In the years 1938 and 1953 he was rector magnificus of the Free University, 1954 Main organizer of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam and from 1954 to 1961 secretary of the scientific department of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences.

In 1946 founded Koksma with the mathematicians and physicists van Dantzig, van der Corput, Kramers, Minnaert, Schouten, the mathematical center ( Mathematisch Centrum ) in Amsterdam, which is now called Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI).

Koksmas most famous work is the book Diophantine approximations, which in turn results in 1936 in mathematics and its applications at Julius Springer in Berlin appeared and gave a comprehensive overview of the then state of research.

In 1939 he led a to the Kurt Mahler ( the 1932 S, T, U classes defined ) equivalent classification of real and complex numbers for transcendence properties a.

1942 proved Koksma named after him inequality, which was founded in 1961 generalized Edmund Hlawka on several dimensions and even today in the treatment of numerical integration methods with quasi- random numbers plays an important role (see also uniform distribution modulo 1, discrepancy and Monte Carlo algorithm ).

To Koksmas students include Nicolaas Govert de Bruijn and Lauwerens Kuipers.

Jurjen Koksma had two brothers who were also mathematicians: Jan Koksma (PhD 1937 in Groningen) and Marten Koksma. Koksma married in 1933 Grietje van der Stouwe, they had five sons and two daughters.

Writings

Koksmas publication list includes 50 mathematical articles, as well as his major work

  • Diophantine Approximations, Springer, results of mathematics and its applications, 1936 ( reprints in 1950, 1974, 2002)

And a conference proceedings (together with Lauwerens Kuipers )

  • Asymptotic distribution modulo 1, Nuffic International Summer School, 1962 ( P. Noordhoff, Groningen 1964).

Date from the year 1930 his first two headings, namely the

  • Dissertation: Over stelsels Diophantine ongelijkheden ( 137 pages ) and the
  • Inaugural speech at the Free University of Amsterdam: Benaderingsproblemen bij irrational getallen (19 pages).

Koksmas coauthors were (in chronological order) Johannes van der Corput Jan Popken, Barend Meulenbeld, István Gál ( Steven Gaal ), Paul Erdos, Raphaël Salem and Gerrit Lekkerkerker. He wrote in about equal proportions in Dutch, German, French and English - but he used German only until 1942 and English until 1943.
