Jurji Zaydan

Dschurdschī Zaidan (in Arabic جرجي زيدان, DMG Ǧurǧī Zaidan ), also George, Gurgi, Jirji and written similarly, ( born December 14, 1861 in Beirut, † July 22, 1914 in Cairo ) was a noted writer, publisher and historian of Arab Nahda. He is regarded as Pinionier of Arab historical novel, but also achieved through the creation of today continuing journal Al-Hilal great importance.

Life

Dschurdschī Zaidan was born in Beirut and grew up as the son of a Greek Orthodox family in rather poor circumstances. In 1881 he began studying medicine at the Syrian Protestant College, later the American University of Beirut, but interrupted his education after less than a year from again after one of the teachers had been dismissed for his lectures on Darwinism, and drew as many of his countrymen, to Cairo. After brief stays in Sudan and London, he settled there permanently.

He worked for the magazines az- Zaman and al - Muqtataf and worked as an author of various scientific and belletristic works, of which his total of 23 historical novels, which have mainly Muslim early days on the subject, were especially popular. In 1892 he founded the journal Al-Hilal ( " The Crescent Moon " ), the orientation and content he was instrumental certain not only as a publisher but also as a writer until his death in 1914.
