Jurriaan Andriessen

Jurriaan Hendrik Andriessen (* November 15 1925 in Haarlem, † August 23 1996 in The Hague) was a Dutch composer, son of the composer Hendrik Andriessen and brother of Louis Andriessen.

He studied at the Utrecht Conservatory with André Jurres ( piano) and Willem van Otterloo ( orchestral conducting ), went in 1947 to Paris, where he studied with Olivier Messiaen, among others. With his composition Het uur monsterlijke Band and he had two pianos in 1948 as the first winner Johan Wagenaar Award in the Netherlands. He continued his studies at Tanglewood, Massachusetts, United States due to a grant from UNESCO and later by the Rockefeller Foundation, with Aaron Copland and Koussevitzky Sergei Aleksandrovich and at the Berkshire Music Center. Then he made study trips to Italy and Germany. For the coronation of the former Princess Beatrix Queen of the Netherlands, he composed Entrada della Regina for brass, timpani and organ.
