Jussi Markkanen

Jussi Markkanen ( born May 8, 1975 in Imatra ) is a Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender, who plays since 2013 with Jokerit in the SM- liiga Lapeenranta.

Career

Markkanen started with the professional hockey in the Finnish SM- liiga, where he spent six seasons. In the NHL Entry Draft 2001 Edmonton Oilers picked him in the fifth round at position 133. Direct to the following season the Finn transferred to North America since played for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League. His time with the Oilers was interrupted when he was replaced in 2003 with the New York Rangers against Brian Leetch. However, the Oilers traded Markkanen still back in the same season. The time the lockout of 2004/ 05 he spent in the Russian Super League.

In the season 2005/ 06 competed with Ty Conklin Markkanen for the position as number two behind Dwayne Roloson. After an injury of Roloson Markkanen got in the Stanley Cup finals, the role as a starter. Previously Markkanen had not played for three months. Markkanen helped to bridge the gap with the Carolina Hurricanes. In the sixth game of the finals series he managed the first shutout of his career. The decisive seventh game of the Oilers lost the Stanley Cup and went to the Hurricanes. During the 2006/07 season he was number two behind Dwayne Roloson and completed 22 games. After the season, his contract was not renewed and he joined the Finnish SM -Liiga for Jokerit.

In Finland, he completed 56 games and reached the semifinals of the playoffs with Jokerit. After a season in his home Markkanen 2008 went to Russia, where he played for HK CSKA Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League. Between 2009 and 2013 he was with the EV train from the National League A busy, before he returned to his hometown club.

Internationally

In the Finnish national Markkanen was used in 2002 and 2004 at the Ice Hockey World Championship. For the Finnish junior team, he played in 1994 and 1995 at the Junior World Cup.
