Justify My Love is a pop song by Madonna. The song was coupled out in November 1990 as a single from their compilation album The Immaculate Collection.

History

Justify My Love was written by Lenny Kravitz, Ingrid Chavez and Madonna. Kravitz wrote the song based on a poem by Chavez, who was considered a protégé of Prince. The song is based on a programmed drum groove sample of Public Enemy's Security of the First World. Chavez was not initially named as co-author and sued Kravitz in 1992.

The song sparked after the appearance due to its text and its music video that took up themes such as sadomasochism, voyeurism and bisexuality, a controversy. So it was felt by MTV as excessive and not played. Only a month earlier was Madonna, who had benefited in her career to date of MTV, has wrapped in an MTV advertising topless and only in the U.S. flag.

Success

Justify My Love reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, # 3 in Switzerland and 9th place in Austria. In Germany the song reached number 10 on the charts.
