Justin Francis Rigali

Justin Francis Cardinal Rigali ( born April 19, 1935 in Los Angeles, USA) is an emeritus Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Life

Justin Francis Rigali was born as the youngest of seven children of Henry Alphonsus Rigali and his wife Frances Irene born white. Two of his brothers and sisters engaged in a clerical career. His sister Charlotte joined the Sisters of St. Joseph, his brother, Nobert the Jesuits.

Rigali received on 25 April in 1961 by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre in Los Angeles, the sacrament of Holy Orders. This year, he began his studies of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, from which he graduated in 1964 with a doctorate.

He then joined the English Department of the Secretariat of State. 1966 to 1970 he was in the service of the Apostolic Nunciature in Madagascar. In 1967 he was awarded by Pope Paul VI. the title honorary chaplain of His Holiness. In 1970 he became director of the English department of the State Secretariat and translator of the Pope, whom he accompanied on several trips. From 1972 to 1973 he was professor at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. On April 19, 1980 Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness.

Also on some pastoral visits of John Paul II Rigali was there, including in the trips to the U.S. in 1979 and 1987.

On 8 June 1985 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Volsinium and as President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and received on 14 September of the same year by Pope John Paul II consecrated bishop; Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo co-consecrators were, at that time Offizial in the Secretariat of State, and Archbishop Achille Silvestrini. Until 1990, he held several other offices in the Roman Curia, including the office of Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Secretary of College of Cardinals.

He was appointed by John Paul II as Archbishop of St. Louis in 1994 and received the Pope in 1999 on his trip to St. Louis.

On 15 July 2003 Rigali was appointed Archbishop of Philadelphia and included as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Prisca in the College of Cardinals on 21 October of the same year. After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave of 2005.

On July 19, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. be put forward for reasons of age resignation to. As his successor, Charles Joseph Chaput was named.

Cardinal Rigali took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. the conclave in 2013 in part, was elected to the Pope Francis. On December 16, 2013, retired from the Congregation for Bishops.
