Justus Gesenius

Justus Gesenius ( born July 6, 1601 Esbeck at Elze, † September 18, 1673 in Hannover ) was a German theologian and hymn writer.

Life

Justus Gesenius was born on July 6, 1601 Esbeck the son of the local rector Joachim Gesenius. He studied since 1618 when Georg Calixtus in Helmstedt theology and received a master's degree in 1628 in Jena. Gesenius was from 1629 to 1636 pastor of St. Magnus in Braunschweig. He later became the second court preacher at the cathedral in Hildesheim and in 1642 the consistory in Hanover, first court preacher and general superintendent of the General diocese Calenberg and 1666 and the General diocese Grubenhagen.

1646 led Gesenius by a general visitation, conducting a general compulsory education.
