Jutta Koether

Jutta Koether (born 1958 in Cologne) is a German painter, performance artist, musician, writer, critic and theorist, who works in New York and Berlin and lives.

Life and work

Koether studied from 1977 to 1981 Art Education at the University of Cologne. She was an editor and (from 1985) co-editor of music and pop culture magazine Spex and is a reviewer and member of numerous journals, for example, of Texte zur Kunst, FlashArt and Artscribe.

The role Jutta Koether was often interpreted as a feminist response to the Cologne scene of the late eighties.

Koether's work includes a variety of activities such as painting, performance, film and music; their political and journalistic activities are considered by her as part of her artistic practice: It describes itself as a "painter, performer, participant " and often works in joint projects with other artists, such as the Sonic Youth musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore and Steven Parrino and Ei Arakawa.

Koether is also a lecturer and has taught at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, the School of Visual Arts, New York, the University of the Arts, Berlin, at Bard College, New York and at the Cooper Union, New York. She lived and worked in Cologne and since the 1990s in New York.

Since 2010 she is Professor of Painting / Drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
