Juvenes Translatores

Juvenes Translatores ( Latin for " young translators ' ) is a translation contest for students in secondary schools in the European Union. It is organized by the European Commission since 2007 annually by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT ).

The next competition will take place in November 2013.

Objectives

The following aspects are to be moved through the competition " Juvenes Translatores " in the spotlight:

  • Learning foreign languages
  • Multilingualism
  • The profession Translator

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness among young people that the mastery of foreign languages ​​is essential for communication in Europe and for a better mutual understanding. At the same time demonstrates that our knowledge of foreign languages ​​must be extended if the diversity of languages ​​in Europe preserved and multilingualism should be promoted. In this context, the translation profession is also advertised for.

Basic Rules

Juvenes Translatores is held annually and is aimed at young people who are in the year of competition, 17 years old. 2013 can therefore take students who are born in the year 1996. Task is to translate a page of text from one of the 23 official EU languages ​​into another, which theoretically 506 language combinations are possible. As an aid only dictionaries are allowed, no computers or other electronic devices. Schools in the EU Member States can register up to five students of any nationality. The number of eligible schools ( total of 751 ) depends on the number of seats held by each country has in the European Parliament.
