K-5 (missile)

The Kaliningrad K -5 ( NATO code name AA-1 "Alkali " ), also known as RS -1U or product ( Isdelije ) ShM was a leitstrahlgeführter Soviet air - to-air guided missiles.

Development of the weapon began in 1951 in the former OKB- 2, which was later renamed MKB torch. 1955 first tests were undertaken and 1957 the weapon to the armed forces under the name Grushin / Tomaschewitsch was (Russian: Грушин / Томашевич ) RS -1 -U delivered. The first types were designed for the on-board radar RP -2U of the MiG- 17PFU and MiG- 19PM. A 1959 published version was designed for the RP-9/RP-9-U- ( Safir ) radar of the Sukhoi Su -9. The missile was mounted on a starting track of the type APU -4 and fired from there. The guided missile riding a beacon transmitted by the airborne radar NII -17 to target aircraft. For optical control in the night-time use by the pilot had the rear tail fins on the cone-shaped endings tracer agent. The RS-2 -U had no tracer agent for day operations. If the missile missed the target, it destroyed itself after 23 seconds. The Leitstrahlverfahren not satisfied and the weapon was by 1967 replaced by the Wympel K-13 using semi-active or infrared seeker head.

In the People's Republic of China the missile was produced under the designation PL -1 for manufactured under license Shenyang J- 6B.
