The K12 is the second highest peak in the Saltoro Mountains, a mountain range of the sub Karakorumgebirges in Indian- controlled area. He is in the disputed border region between Pakistan territory of Gilgit -Baltistan ( the former Northern Areas ) and the Indian Kashmir region in the southwest of the Siachen Glacier. The border line is there is not precisely defined, it probably runs over the main ridge of the Saltoro Mountains and thus the peak of K12. Its name comes from its name during the initial survey of the Karakoram.

The K12 is located in the south-west of the Siachen Glacier; the K12 Glacier flows on its northeastern slopes and feeds the Siachen. The western slopes of the K12 flow to Bilafond Glacier system, from there to Dansam River and finally into the Indus.

The K12 learned some climbing activity, partly due to the unstable political situation and the continued military presence in the area. A first ascent attempt was made after a reconnaissance visit in 1957 by the famous explorer Eric Shipton in 1960. After another failed attempt by a Japanese climbing team in 1971, made it a more Japanese expedition to bring the two climbers Shinichi Takagi and Tsutomu Ito to the summit. They fell and died on the descent, their bodies could not be found. Another Japanese expedition returned in 1975 and managed the second ascent. In 1984, the Indian Army took over the summit as part of their plan by Pakistan to block all claims to the Siachen glacier on the undemarkationierten part of the Line of Control, in fitting. There are no later climbs or summit attempts in the Himalayan Index lists ..
