Ka'b bin Zuhayr

Ka'b ibn Zuhayr (Arabic كعب بن زهير, DMG Ka ʿ b b. Zuhair, also Kaab ben Sohair ) is an Arab poet of the pre-Islamic period.

According to tradition, was the eldest son of the poet Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma to six men who rejected a conversion to Islam. He wrote satirical verses about Muhammad. Later he decided to submit. Ka'b ibn Zuhair wrote a poem called Banat Su ʿ Ad. This he wore the prophets before, was rewarded with the mantle of the Prophet and converted to Islam.

His Moallaka is individually edited by Rose Mueller ( Analecta arabica, Part 2, Leipzig 1826), translated by Friedrich Rückert ( Hamasa I, adding 1 to No. 149); obtained his poems see at Ahlwardt in the Six ancient poets (London 1870).

Zuhair is now a popular Arabic first name for men.
