Ka'eke'eke

The kāekeeke, also ahupahu, is a product manufactured from bamboo pipe ramming, which is mostly used in Hawaiian music in pairs to the rhythm accompaniment for traditional song or hula dances.

Structure & play

The bamboo cane is one of a musical instrument to the Aufschlagidiophonen, it is used in a variety of lengths from about 30 to 150 centimeters. The lower side, is pushed to the tone generation on the floor or a mat is closed by a cloth, usually Tapa. This protects against premature wear and soiling.

The game is played in a sitting or standing position with a kāekeeke in each hand. The longer the tube the lower the sound produced. When standing, the body will still only rhythmically back and forth, without performing the specific hula steps. To play harmonies, one needs several instruments of varying length, which are combined with each other.
