Kaarta

Kaarta was a short-lived kingdom of Bambara in the west of present-day Mali. The area was northwest of the Senegal River.

History

As Biton Coulibaly, the founder of the kingdom of Bambara, more control over Ségou exercised, a part of the population was dissatisfied with his rule and fled to the West. In 1753 they founded the kingdom Kaarta on the territory of the former kingdom of Ghana and made the city Nioro du Sahel their capital. After Louis Faidherbe had an area of approximately 54,500 km ².

The kingdom lost its independence in 1854 by the jihad ( holy war ) of the Al- Hajj Omar in West Africa. He took a Nioro and killed the king of Kaarta, ( Fama) Mamady Kandian, and his entire family. French Colonel Louis Archinard conquered later in 1890, the territory of the former kingdom Kaarta.
