Kadamba dynasty

The Kadamba were an ancient Indian dynasty in the town of Banavasi, Karnataka province, whose progeny is attributed, inter alia, the creation of Goa.

The founder was the Brahmin Mayurasvarman (reigned about 345-360 ), who jostled as a student in Kanchipuram ( the main and university town of Pallava ) by a nobleman and then robber. Finally, he was of the under Visnugopa (reigned about 350-355 ) in distress geratenen Pallava recognized as king, but as a consequence the Kadamba were still vassals of this.

The Kadamba Empire reached its peak under Kakusthavarman (reigned about 425-450 ) and Santivarman (reigned about 450-475 ), where the kings with the Vakataka intermarried and had resolved by the Pallava. It seceded under King Mrigesavarman (reigned about 475-488 ) in two lines ( detachment of his uncle Krishnavarman in the south). Despite new successes under King Ravivarman (reigned about 500-538 ), the Kadamba weakened by this inner conflict so that shortly after the transition to the throne on to the younger line under Krishnavarman II (reigned about 550-565 ), the emerging Chalukya the supremacy took over.

In the late 10th century, they created again a modest empire in the area of Goa.
