History

The Kaffee Alt Wien was opened in 1936 by Leopold Hawes and his wife Josefine one day after her wedding. By 1939, they led the Kaffee Alt Wien, then moved to the Dorotheergasse around and took there the Café Ludwig, which is known as Café Hawelka today.

1976 took place a notice of action by the Viennese artist Gottfried Helnwein in Old Vienna. Since the 1980s, the restaurant has developed into one night café. Due to the opening times, but also the symptom with many posters on the walls and dim lights, the boundaries between traditional cafe and pub are now blurred. The sparse illumination is in contrast to most other coffee houses where a lighter atmosphere is created for example by generous windows. The Old Vienna is frequented by, among other artists, writers and journalists. As a specialty of the house is considered goulash.
