Kaiping

Kaiping (Chinese开平 市/开平 市, pinyin Kāipíngshì ) is a county -level city in Guangdong province with about 680,000 inhabitants and an area of 1,659 km ². It is primarily an industrial city, is within China but because of hundreds of strange fortified houses known and for this reason a tourist attraction.

Geography

Kaiping is located about 110 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Guangzhou at the transition from the level of the Pearl River in a hilly country. West and south are spreading thus wide plains, north and east hills and plateaus. The city is located on the banks of the Tan River (潭江), which flows through the city in west-east direction and has formed in this area a flood plain.

History

Economy

Kaiping is one of the richer cities of the region. The GDP per capita was 16 600 RMB in 2002.

Culture

Kaiping is known within China for the architecturally unique Diaolou (碉楼, Diaolou ). Diaolou are fastened, usually five-storey houses, which were used in the rural areas of both houses as well as defenses. The oldest Diaolou were built from the late 19th century in response to the chaos of war around the Taiping Rebellion.

Traffic
