Kaiyuan, Yunnan
The city of Kaiyuan (Chinese开远市, Pinyin Kāiyuǎn Shì ) is a county-level city of the Autonomous Prefecture of Honghe Hani and Yi the south of Yunnan Province. It has an area of 1946.91 square kilometers and counts 260,000 inhabitants ( 2004).
Administrative Divisions
At the community level there is an administrative district in two road districts, two large municipalities and three municipalities ( a nationality community) together. These are:

- Greater community Xiaolongtan小 龙潭镇
- Greater community Zhongheying中 和 营镇

Fossil finds
In the area of Xiaolongtan Coal Mine fossils have been discovered since 1956, are 10-8 million years old and are interpreted as an early relative of the extant orangutans. The fossils were initially assigned as Dryopithecus keiyuanensis the genus Dryopithecus and later the genus Ramapithecus; Since 1987, however, they are managed as a separate genus. The Xiaolongtan discoveries are made since then as Lufengpithecus keiyuanensis to the genus Lufengpithecus.
