Kakhovka

Kachowka (Ukrainian and Russian Каховка ) is a city in the southern Ukrainian Kherson on the right bank of the Dnieper River, which is dammed at this point in Kachowkaer reservoir.

Geography

The city with about 37,000 inhabitants ( 2013) located about 71 kilometers northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Kherson. On the opposite bank of the reservoir is the city Beryslaw. The two cities are connected to each other via the Dneprbrücke in the nearby town of Nowa Kachowka, which is the only bridging of the Dnieper between Kherson and Zaporizhia.

History

The town's origins lie in a fortress that was built in 1492 by the Khanate of Crimea, in 1695 but finally destroyed. 1771 settlement Schagingirejskoje (Ukrainian Шагингирейское ) was mentioned on the foundations of 1791 arose out of it today Kachowka. In 1918 she was appointed to the city, since 1972 it is under Oblastverwaltung.

Destined for the city is the scale 1947-1956 reservoir. In the village itself there is a large food factory.
