Kakopetria

Kakopetria ( = "bad blocks" ) is a village in Cyprus on the northern slopes of the Troodos on the B9, 40 km north of Limassol and 55 kilometers southwest of the capital, Nicosia, at an altitude of 667 meters. It is the highest village in the Solea Valley and has 1198 inhabitants. Many Cypriots have here a second home or spend their summer holidays if the cooler temperatures. This is due to the altitude and the dense forest that surrounds the village. Two small streams ( " Kargotis ", " Garillis "), which unite in the place and together form the " Klarios " provide a comfortable humidity.

Description

Kakopetria lies along the valley of the two rivers where the "new" Kakopetria is with its large, modern houses in the eastern part of the valley. The "old ", listed Kakopetria lies to the west between the two streams. The streets are narrow and steep, the houses have stone foundations and mud-plastered walls. They come mostly from the 18-19. Century and were renovated with state support. The roofs of the houses are (mostly ) covered with round roof tiles and almost all houses have one upstairs and one ( partially intricately carved ), wooden balconies.

History

A settlement there were at this point in the 6th - 7th century, as documented by excavations in 1938. Mentioned by medieval historians, the place has been proven since the Frankish rule.

The excavations revealed numerous findings that represent the goddess Athena, among others. These figures and statues are mostly made ​​of terracotta or limestone, as well as arrow and spear points made ​​of bronze and iron were found. These findings point to the early days of the colonization of Cyprus and are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Nicosia.

Tourism

Kakopetria is due to its healthy and cool climate, beautiful nature in a quiet location, dense vegetation (poplar, apple and walnut trees), its cool streams and its original townscape like to visit. The proximity to the cities of Nicosia and Limassol favored tourist activities. Hotels, taverns and numerous Kafenia (coffee houses) make Kakopetria one of the most popular attractions in Cyprus. Also worth seeing is the little old barn roof village church " Panagia Theotokos " (= " the God giving birth " ) from 1520 with beautiful paintings.
