Kakuma

Kakuma is a refugee camp in Turkana District about 120 km north of Lodwar in the Rift Valley Province in northern Kenya with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The camp was established in 1992, initially for about 30,000-40,000 children and young people from southern Sudan, the so-called "Lost Boys", furnished. Today, the camp residents of the local Turkana population in the sparsely populated desert region are greatly outnumbered. About 70 % of them are from southern Sudan. Other major interests represent Ethiopians and Somalis also live in Kakuma Eritreans, Burundians, Rwandans, Ugandans and Congolese.

In 2000, relocated from Kakuma to the U.S. about 3500 Lost Boys. Since the end of the war in southern Sudan 2005, the repatriation of southern Sudanese from the Kakuma has begun.
