Kalø Ruin

Kalø Castle (Danish: Kalø or Kalø ruin ) is the ruin of a medieval castle on the Danish island Kalø.

Geography

It is located in the Kalo Vig about two kilometers from the town of Ebeltoft in Syddjurs, Region Midtjylland away, on the island connected by a causeway to the mainland Kalø.

History

The construction of the castle was begun by King Erik IV Menved in 1313. 1518 Gustav I Vasa was imprisoned at the castle by the Danish King Christian II. Since about 1660, the plant will be forfeited. The castle belongs since 1945 the Danish state and is open for tours.

In addition to the ruins of the castle - essentially the foundations as well as some higher walls and the rest of the main tower have been preserved - the fortifications on the island Kalø are clearly visible.
