El- Kelâa M'Gouna (Arabic لقلعة مگونة ) also El- Kelâa (Des ) M'Gouna or El Kelaâ Mgouna is a small town in Morocco and has about 10,500 inhabitants ( 2005). She is known as the Rose City of Morocco. The town's name probably originated from Kelâa (fortress) and Mgouna ( name of a tribe ).

Geography

The city is located in the province of Ouarzazate on the Assif M'Goun, a river which flows from the High Atlas Mountains Coming into the Dades. It is located in 1470 m height on the road of the Kasbahs.

Attractions

Above the city is the Kasbah of the former Pasha of Marrakech Tihami al - Glawi. On the spot borders the valley of roses, a large rose -growing area, which also houses a rose garden. Other attractions include the Derb Jdid and El Had district and the Dades Gorge is located nearby.

Economy

The main economic factor is the production of rose oil and rose water. To the main harvest about 400 tonnes of rose petals are used daily by the 4,200 km-long rose hedges harvested and processed in two factories rose water. The rose oil is mainly used by the inhabitants for baking and cooking, rose water is used as the essence for perfume production. In addition to manufacturing products rose and the trade plays a major role with livestock and tourism.

Regular events

From the first Friday after May 1, the Annual Fete Mousemat Roses is celebrated after the harvest Rose, a three-day Rose Festival, which attracts many visitors and Rose connoisseurs from all over the world. Highlight of the festival is the choice of the Rose Queen. It also offers music and dancing and a big parade on the program. Another regular event is the weekly market day every Wednesday takes place.

Twinning

Currently (2007) the first talks about the Moroccan ambassador in Germany run by a twinned with the Uetersen. This would be the first twinning of two cities rose at all.
