Kalamazoo Wings (1974–2000)

The Michigan K- Wings were founded as a Kalamazoo Wings American Hockey franchise in the International Hockey League from Kalamazoo, Michigan. The home ground was the Wings Stadium.

History

In 1974, founded the franchise in Kalamazoo K- Wings and included in the IHL. Already in the second season the team reached the playoffs, but retired in the first round. A year later, it reached the second round.

In the late 1970s, the franchise reached its peak: the two-time winning the Turner Cup, the championship trophy of the IHL. After that it stayed in the middle of the league.

From 1987 to 1991 was the longtime NHL player of the Chicago Blackhawks, John Marks, as head coach behind the gang. Although he reached in each case a positive record this season with the team, left the team in the play- offs in each of the first and second round of the competition.

On 16 May 1995, the owner of the Kalamazoo Wings to rename the franchise in Michigan K- Wings decided. As a partner of the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League have been found. The K- Wings were thus from the 1995/96 season, the farm team of the stars. In her first season after renaming the K- Wings were able to reach the second round of the play -offs. It was followed by two defeats in the first round in the season 1996/ 97 and 1997/ 98, before the team in 1998/99 again reached the second round.

The season 1999/2000 was the last before the dissolution of the club. In this the team pointed to the main round of the East Division of the IHL to only 78 points. With this value, the K- Wings occupied only the sixth place in the East Division. Thus, since 1993, the team missed the first time the play-offs. Subsequently, the partnership with the Dallas Stars was terminated by the then management and dissolved the Michigan K- Wings.
