Geography

Location

The community Kalefeld between Harz and Solling near the floodplain (Leine ) in southern Lower Saxony.

The total area of the municipality is 84.10 km ² Kalefeld, of which 39 percent will be used for forestry.

It is first mentioned in a document of 889 Kalefeld Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia.

The community Kalefeld was on 1 March 1974 local government reform by the integration of formerly independent municipalities Dögerode, Düderode, Eboldshausen, True, Oldenrode, Oldershausen, Sebexen, Westerhof, Wiershausen and Willershausen, who belonged to the old office Westerhof increased. The Old Office Westerhof was temporarily attached to the Office of Osterode.

Roman battlefield

  • Signs of a battle between Germans and Romans in the 3rd century were rediscovered in the 21st century in the municipality Kalefeld. This surprised even the experts, because the field is relatively far north of the limes; clearly a relatively late stage of the Roman Empire can be assigned and also harbored numerous finds. A selection of articles has been issued since 2013 in the National Museum of Braunschweig. At the original location, the archaeological site at Oldenrode, tours take place continuously, organized by the tourist office in Bad Gandersheim.
