Kalevala, Russia

Kalevala (Russian Калевала, Finnish and Karelian Kalevala ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Karelia in northwest Russia. By 1963, the place was called Uchta (Russian Ухта, Karelian and Finnish Uhtua ). Kalevala has 4529 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is the administrative seat of the Rajons Kalevala. The town lies on the northern shore of Lake Sredneje Kuito 550 km north-west of Petrozavodsk and 182 kilometers west of Kem.

Uchta was one of the villages in which Elias Lönnrot recorded the oral tradition of folk poetry in the 19th century, on the basis of which he created the Finnish national epic Kalevala. In line with this Uchta was renamed in 1963 in Kalevala.
