Kalevi Sorsa

Kalevi Sorsa Taisto [ tɑi̯stɔ kɑlɛvi sɔrsɑ ] ( born December 21, 1930 in Keuruu; † January 16, 2004 in Helsinki) was 1972-1987 decade Finnish prime minister and is considered one of the most important Finnish Social Democrats.

Biography

Sorsa was born in located in the countryside of central Finland Keuruu, his parents Kaarlo Oskari and Elsa Sofia, born Leinonen, but moved to live and work more than once. So he went in Jyväskylä and Lappeenranta to school. In Lappeenranta Sorsa started in 1948 in the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP ) to be active.

Sorsa, who had obtained a master's degree in social sciences, owned from 1970 to 1991 with a mandate in the Finnish Parliament. He is one of the most important politicians in the era of President Urho Kekkonen and Mauno Koivisto. Sorsa was the General Secretary (1969-1975) and from 1975 to 1987 chairman of the SDP, Speaker of Parliament between 1989 and 1991 and a total of ten years of Finnish prime minister in four governments ( 1972-1975, 1977-1979, 1982-1983, 1983-1987 ). In 1975/76 Martti Miettunen of the Centre Party from 1987 to 1989 under the Conservatives Harri Holkeri, he was also been in personal union 's deputy prime minister and foreign minister. As foreign minister, he had already officiated in the transitional government under Rafael Paasio 1972 for half a year. Sorsa sought to participate in 1994 at the presidential election. Prior to his political career Sorsa worked, among others from 1959 to 1965 for UNESCO in Paris and then to 1969 as Secretary General of the Finnish UNESCO Committee. From 1967 to 1969 he worked at the Finnish Ministry of Education.

Since 1953 he was married to the interpreter Elli Irene Lääkäri. Kalevi Sorsa died on 16 January 2004 at his home in Helsinki on cancer.
