The Kalevi Spordihall ( to German Sports Hall Kalev ) is a multi-function hall in the Estonian capital Tallinn. It is located in the district Juhkentali.

History

The Kalevi Spordihall is named after Kalev, a legendary hero of the Estonian mythology. It was inaugurated on 24 November 1962. Its main architects were Peeter Tarvas and Uno Tölpus.

There is a modernist mural in the socialist style above the main entrance. It shows on the left a dancer in the rhythmic gymnastics with rod and ribbon. On the right are three figures. Creators of the artwork were Lember Bogatkina and Margareta Fuks.

In the first month after the opening occurred in the Kalevi Spordihall four weeks the Eisballett the Soviet Union. The Ice Revue was a sensation in the former Estonian SSR. Ticket sales brought almost the entire nominal construction cost of 400,000 rubles in again.

In the 1960s, the sports hall had the largest event hall of Tallinn. Therefore, not only sports events but also dance competitions, fashion shows and entertainment programs were held there. In May 1967, the hall was the site of the legendary international jazz festivals in the Estonian capital.

Sports Hall today

Today in the multi-function hall mainly basketball matches and athletics events. Besides tennis tournaments, volleyball and football games, futsal events, boxing matches, Ringer's Wettbwerber and Asian martial arts are held there. The great room offers space for 1,000 seats.

The hall was extensively renovated in 2011. Since autumn 2010, the city of Tallinn is the owner of the sports hall.
