Kalifornsky is a census -designated place in Kenai Peninsula Borough of Alaska with 5846 inhabitants ( 2000). The settlement is located on the Kalifornsky Beach Road on the Kenai Peninsula in the Cook Inlet, west of Soldotna and south of Kenai.

History

Kalifornsky was first mentioned in 1916 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. About the origin of the place name, there are two different theories. Either it was derived from " Kali", the concept of Dena'ina Athabascan - for fishermen, or he comes from a Dena'ina Indians who had worked from 1812 to the 1820s in California's Fort Ross.

Peter Kalifornsky, who was born in 1911 in the village, was the last speaker of the Lower Cook Inlet dialect of the Dena'ina.

7.4 % of residents Kalifornskys are Alaska Natives or their descendants.

Infrastructure

The Sterling Highway connects with Kalifornsky Anchorage. The nearest airport is located in Kenai, a hospital communicates with the Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna available. In the village a school with about 400 students there.
