Kalinga Prize

The Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science (short: Kalinga Prize; Kalinga Prize for the Popularization English of Science) is assigned by UNESCO since 1952 award. It is awarded for significant contributions to the popularization of science only to natural persons who have an outstanding career as a scientist, or even as a writer, editor and film producer.

In the early years the award has been presented annually. The prize is awarded every two years from 2009. The prize money of U.S. $ 20,000 (as of 2011 ) and is provided by the Kalinga Foundation Trust, based in Bhubaneswar, India. The foundation goes on a donation from Biju Patnaik ( Bijayananda Patnaik, 1916-1997 ) from 1951 back. From the year 2010, the Foundation is also funding a national Kalinga Samman for Popularization of Science, the (1 lakh ) is worth 100,000 rupees.

The award bears the name of the ancient Indian Kingdom of Kalinga. The asteroid ( 26214 ) Kalinga was in turn named after the Kalinga Prize.
