Kalininsk, Saratov Oblast
Kalininsk (Russian Калининск ) is a city in the Russian Saratov Oblast with a population of 16,441 (as of October 14, 2010 ).
Location
Kalininsk is located in a desert area by the river Balanda, a tributary of the Medveditsa, 121 km west of the regional capital Saratov. The nearest town is Atkarsk, 55 km to the northeast. With Atkarsk Kalininsk is connected by a railway line, where it has a railhead. Also, the A144 trunk road runs through Kalininsk.
History
Kalininsk was founded as a village called Balanda in 1680 by Ukrainian settlers, so here until today relatively large number of ethnic Ukrainians live ( about 12 % of urban population ). In the 18th century the village belonged to the well-known in Russia Counts of Scheremetews. Their former country house in Kalininsk has been preserved as a historical and architectural monument today.
In 1939, the place the status of an urban-type settlement. In 1962 he got city rights and was renamed Kalininsk. It was named after Mikhail Kalinin of politicians, in whose honor during the Soviet era a number of places ( including Kalinin and Kaliningrad ) has been named or renamed.
