Kalkaska County, Michigan

Kalkaska County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Kalkaska.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1478 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Crawford County, Missaukee County, Grand Traverse County Antrim and County.

History

Kalkaska County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Wabassee County. It was named, as well as the district capital, by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.
