Kalker Friedhof

The Kalker Cemetery is a municipal cemetery in the right-bank district of Cologne Merheim.

The cemetery was created in 1904 when the present-day district of Kalk was still a separate city (the annexation to Cologne took place only in 1910 ). The creation of a new cemetery became necessary when on the old Kalker cemetery at the Chapel Street - which is preserved as a park - the place was no longer sufficient. The new, much larger cemetery was out of town invested in Merheim; the land was provided by the merchant Joseph Bardenheuer available, who later also his last resting place here. The opening took place on November 3, 1904 In the 1960s, the cemetery was substantially expanded. ; its present area is approximately 15.4 hectares.

Among the most famous tombs of the cemetery Kalker heard the elaborate wall grave of the above mentioned Joseph Bardenheuer near the main entrance and the tomb of the famous pedagogue Heinrich Welsch, who is buried in hall 44. The oldest tomb of the cemetery is at the end of the main gallery on the left side. There was Aloys Thumb, the penultimate Mayor of lime, buried in November 1900. Overall, the Kalker cemetery is home to around 14,000 tombs.

The erected around 1920 high cross with bronze body is attributed to Franz Albermann ( 1877-1959 ) and Wilhelm ( Willi ) Albermann Jr. ( * 1873).
