Kallaste

Kallaste (Russian Красные Горы / Krasnie Gory ) is a city in the northwest of the district of Tartu in Estonia, located on the western shore of Lake Peipsi. Beginning of 2006, Kallaste 1152 inhabitants, most of them native Russian speakers. The Russian name of the city derives from the steep coast from red sandstone.

History

Kallaste built in the 18th century as a settlement of Russian Old Believers. The city rights were granted in 1938 Kallaste awarded. In Kallaste the last public statue of Lenin in Estonia was established in 1988.

Attractions

Scenic Kallaste is characterized by the shore of Lake Peipsi and the red sandstone coast, which runs parallel to the shore of the lake. Not far from the bus station is a small post office with tourist information, the information primarily via the scenic aspect Kallastes. At the edge of the city stands the simple Orthodox Church.
