Kallikrein is a serine protease, ie an enzyme which contains the amino acid serine in their active center, and capable of cleaving proteins. Transferred kallikrein inactive precursors of tissue hormones in their active form. The precursors in this case are so-called kininogens, the active forms are called kinins.

Kallikrein is found in the salivary glands, pancreas, and kidneys as glandular kallikrein. The inactive precursor in blood plasma prekallikrein is present, which in turn by the activated blood coagulation factor XII ( Hageman factor ) is cleaved proteatisch and is converted into active kallikrein. As an endogenous activator of plasminogen, it is involved in fibrinolysis. The system of kallikrein and kinins operates in a manner similar to the renin-angiotensin -aldosterone system plays a role in the regulation of blood pressure, electrolyte and Wasserhomöostase and in inflammatory processes. A total of 15 subtypes are known. Some subtypes are diagnostically interesting as a tumor marker.
