Kalloni (Greek Καλλονή ( f sg ) ) is since 2011 a congregation of the Lesbos Prefecture on the Greek island of Lesbos and has since formed a district. After area residents and Kalloni is the second largest district of the municipality Lesbos. Council is based in the same small town with 1,956 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

The municipality is located on the northwest side of the Gulf of Kalloni ( Κόλπος Καλλονής ) and extends to the north coast of the island. Neighboring districts are community to the west Eresus - Andissa, in the north of Petra and to the east of Agia Paraskevi. The place Kalloni is situated in a fertile plain 100 km ² approximately 3 km inland from the Gulf.

Administrative divisions

Kalloni was founded as an independent country community ( Κοινότητα Καλλονή ) 1918. Through several incorporations the municipal area has been continuously enlarged and 1994 received the status of a municipality ( Δήμος Καλλονής ). Its current expansion was Kalloni by further incorporations in 1997. Since the administrative reform in 2010 Kalloni is a district in the newly created municipality of Lesvos ( Δήμος Λέσβου ).

The Municipality of Kalloni ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Καλλονής ) is divided into nine towns: ( In brackets the Greek spelling and the population as of 2011)

  • Kalloni ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Καλλονής, 2150 ), 3 km from the bay. Kalloni ( Καλλονή ( f sg ), 1,956 ), seat of the municipality, due to its central location, a commercial center of the island.
  • Women's monastery of Panagia Myrsiniotissis ( Μονή Παναγίας Μυρσινιωτίσσης, 6 inhabitants)
  • Petsofas ( Πετσοφάς ( m. sg. ), 188)
  • Agra ( Άγρα ( f sg ) 861 ) A few kilometers west of Agra are two hulls of windmills on both sides of the road.
  • Apothikes ( Αποθήκες ( f sg ), 54)
  • Agios Georgios ( Άγιος Γεώργιος ( m. sg. ), Uninhabited island)
  • Arisvi ( Αρίσβι ( f sg ), 703)

  • Scale Kallonis ( Σκάλα Καλλονής, 462 ) West of Skala Kalloni, the beautiful beaches and therefore also important for tourism, there is a wetland, rich in water turtles, snakes and frogs. In summer, the festival of anchovies will take place in Skala Kalloni. The anchovies from the Bay of Kalloni is traded worldwide.
  • Parakila ( Παράκοιλα (n. pl. ), 821 ) On the edge of the village are the remains of a decaying Turkish bathhouse. Just south of the village are the remains of an old bridge. A few kilometers further direction of Agra stands on the south side of the road a well-preserved minaret from the time of Turkish occupation.

Southeast of Kalloni salt pans are located, which today still serve the salt from seawater by Eindunstung. The 10 to 12 meter high white salt mountains are visible from far around the bay. The outer salt flats are rich in exotic birds such as flamingos, egrets, black storks. On the way there is a bird watching tower to the public.
