Kalmar Municipality

Kalmar is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Kalmar County, the historical province of Småland. The main town of the municipality is squid.

Geography

The municipality borders on the sea side of the Kalmar Strait in the Baltic Sea.

History

In the village you will find more than a thousand prehistoric monuments. Most are located in a ring around the city of Kalmar and come mainly from the Iron Age. 1987 archeologists discovered the village Tingby which lies about 10 kilometers west of Kalmar, the remains of an ancient settlement. It turned out that the place was inhabited more than 8,000 years ago. This place is now considered as the oldest known Scandinavian settlement. Not far from the airport of the capital there is a stone circle. It is thought that he belonged to the cemetery in a prehistoric village.

In the Middle Ages a system of several watchtowers set up to seaward defense along the Baltic coast. Some of these towers were among the castellated stone churches, of which one had a good view of the sea and the surrounding countryside. The churches were also a refuge for enemy attacks. The oldest church stands in the place Hossmo and is dated to the year 1175. The main tower standing directly in Kalmar and later became the castle.
