Kalmar Nyckel

The Kalmar nyckel (also Calmare nyckel ) was a 1625 built in Holland armed merchant ship that carried mainly Swedish settlers in the "New World ". It was developed by the Swedish town of Kalmar ( historical province of Småland) commissioned and constructed as a large three-masted pinnace.

The first of four consecutive trips to North America began in December 1637 by Gothenburg. The ship ran but equal in the North Sea in heavy storm, so once Holland had to be run for repair. On New Year's Day 1638 she could run again and reached under her captain January Hindriksen van der Water, in March 1638 neuzugründende colony New Sweden, which should be under the leadership of Peter Minuit. Today is the area and is located in Wilmington Delaware at Delaware (USA), where then the replica of the ship was launched.

She took part in the Swedish - Danish War of 1657. There are two different reports of their demise in the late 17th century; either they sank off the coast of Sweden at Kalmar or in the North Sea off England.

The replica from 1997 has a length of 28.3 meters, a width of 7.62 m and a draft of 4 m. The ship runs a maximum of 12.4 knots.
