Kaloyan (sebastocrator)

Kaloyan ( Bulgarian Калоян, Old Bulgarian Калѡѣнъ ) was a Bulgarian noble, Sebastocrator of Sredets (now Sofia) during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. He probably belonged to the house Asen and is known as founder of the Boyana Church.

The only written source about Kaloyan is the foundation inscription is held under his fresco in the Boyana Church in that is Kaloyan Sebastocrator of Sofia, cousin of Tsar Constantine Tich Asen and grandson of the Serbian Stefan Nemanjić.

According to the historian Bakalov Kaloyan father of Sebastocrator Alexander, son of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen I. might have been. He relies on the foundation inscription in the Boyana Church. Kaloyan was opponents of the pro- Byzantine policy of the Bulgarian Tsar Michael Asen II (1246-1256) and participated in the Boljarenverschwörung, when he was killed during a hunt. In the subsequent civil war his cousin Constantine Asen supported him.

It is believed that Kaloyan had to build the palace of the Roman emperor Constantine I again and expand the residence. In addition to the known Boyana Church, which today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, he donated yet the churches Sweta Petka Stara and Sveti Nikolaj.
