Kamaishi, Iwate

Kamaishi (Japanese釜 石 市, -shi ) is a city in Iwate Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

Geography

The municipality is located on the Pacific Ocean along the Sanriku Riasküste with many deeply cut bays. This and the nearby coastal mountains rising reinforce the effects of tsunamis.

Kamaishi is located north of Sendai, southeast of Morioka and east of Tono.

History

On March 11, 2011, the Tōhoku Earthquake of 2011, the strongest ever recorded in Japan earthquake occurred. As a result of Kamaishi was devastated by a 9.3 m high tsunami that devastated the city and bridges destroyed. Until May 20, 839 dead and 508 missing persons were counted.
