The Kamet with 7,756 m the second highest mountain in the Garhwal region of India after the Nanda Devi ( 7,816 m). It is located on the Indo-Tibetan border and is used by the Tibetans Kang- Med ( "Burning Mountain" ) called.

First attempts to climb already undertook in 1855 the brothers Adolf and Robert Schlagintweit. The first ascent should, however, until 1931 by Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, RL Holdsworth and Lewa Sherpa succeed, members of a British- Nepalese expedition.

The first ascent put in their time and then a new much-publicized altitude record is: The Kamet was up to the ascent of Nanda Devi in 1936, the highest climbed mountain, but highs were in 1922 on Mount Everest has been achieved of well over 8000 meters.

The Kamet has recently been reopened to foreign expeditions.

In addition to peaks and neighbors

In the north of Kamet the 7355 meter high Abi Gamin (also expressed Ibi Gamin ), considered as a secondary peak of Kamet due to its Vertical separation of 217 meters.

On the south ridge of Kamet the Mana closes, whose main peak Mana I reached an altitude of 7272 meters. Northwest of Kamet and Abi Gamin is the 7242 meter high Mukut Parbat (also Mukut Parvat ).
