Kamisese Mara

Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara GCMG, KBE ( born May 6, 1920 in Vanua Balavu, † April 18, 2004 in Suva ), a native Kamisese Kapaiwai Tuimacilai Mara is regarded as the founder of modern Fiji.

He was the chief minister, the forerunner of the Prime Minister in Fiji from 1967 until independence in 1970, and apart from a brief interruption in 1987, Prime Minister of 1970 until 1992. Subsequently he was President of Fiji from 1993 to 2000 ". Ratu " is the Fijian name for a chief.

1969 Mara was elevated to Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, after he was in 1961 appointed an Officer of the Order. 1983 he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. He was also Chancellor of the University of the South Pacific, which had been founded by him.

Mara was a keen cricketer and played among other things, in two first-class matches against New Zealand teams.
